
Experimental Course Proposal for Spring 2014:
MUS ENS 3120:30 Vernacular Music Ensemble
Purpose:
The purpose of the Vernacular Music Ensemble is to provide an opportunity for students to rehearse and perform vernacular and original music while at the same time learning secondary instruments associated with popular music. Based on work by Bazan (2006), students enrolled in the course will (Figure 1):

Purpose:
The purpose of the Vernacular Music Ensemble is to provide an opportunity for students to rehearse and perform vernacular and original music while at the same time learning secondary instruments associated with popular music. Based on work by Bazan (2006), students enrolled in the course will (Figure 1):
- Learn and develop skills on a secondary instrument commonly found in a vernacular music group (e.g., drums, electric guitar, electric bass)
- Learn how to read tablature and other informal modes of music notation
- Practice non-traditional aural skills
- Rehearse music in a collaborative and student directed learning environment
- Learn and develop the skills necessary for working with audio equipment (e.g., microphones, guitar amplifiers)
- Write a song and teach it to the ensemble
- Rehearse different genres of music
